Mr. Willink I am 14 and listen to your podcast all the time with my dad. I think they are awesome. I was just wandering if you have any advice for me. I aspire to go and graduate from West Point Army Academy.
Sincerely, Brody
Hello Jocko/Echo. I am a long time listener of your podcasts and have found them very informative and insightful (absolutely great stuff). In this particular podcast 244, your guests Mike and George have shared a wealth of knowledge on hiring talent. Thank you.
Historically, I have seen a great focus on hiring from competitor and building teams with the exact same skills. When hiring, I always spoke to individuals and with a shortlist, I asked them for a step by step process to do X (listening how they explained and communicated).
one example: the realestate industry has boomed for decades in Australia, which meant sales happened regardless of the sales person’s efforts. Now the industry is in a down turn, and many do not have the basic selling skills, but i am sure the CV’s look impressive. The sad thing is the hiring agencies, only want people with these skills.
In a discussion with an AWS talent person last year, they informed me that every new person must be able to add one or more new skill(s) and capability to the team. I thought this was a great approach.
Thank you for a great Podcast
Salvatore
Hey, I’m not in real estate, but am looking for a new job and trying to figure out how to actually demonstrate talent. I found your comment about adding at least one skill to a team helpful.
Do you have any other insight?
Hi, the best way to understand what talent you have is to list your accomplishment in your previous positions and break down what you did when you achieved your results. Then translate the how into skills/ talent. Always look for the buzz words from the position description or online for similar positions.
I have used the STAR (Situation, Task at hand, action you took, Results) system to bring out the talent and skills in a CV or cover letter. Lots of examples online. Using the STAR system in conversations at work shows you’re mentally organised and communicate clearly and affective.
Reaching out to recruiters and politely following up with them is important, but don’t be a pain.
happy to hear from others as well
I hope this helps.
