This one hit close to home, my dad was drafted into the Australian Army by virtue of a lottery draw – if it matched your birthdate, you were called up to the military. There were a few checks and balances but overall this is how it worked in 1968 in Australia. So my dad was in 8RAR, he got given a choice between a tour of duty in the Vietnam jungle for 1 year, or 2 years in Malaya – rear echelon. He took the latter option. He took a two year tour in Malaya and was allowed to take his wife (my mother) there.
