The “Proverbs of the Light Infantry” came out following the US Army “White Paper” and the re-establishment of the Light Infantry Divisions and the Light Infantry Division Concept. As part of that they also instituted the COHORT system. The infantry soldiers in a Battalion did Basic Training and AIT together and then moved to their duty station as a group … they were locked in for three years together. The COHORT program lasted until about 1990 when it was discontinued as it proved to much of a challenge to leadership. They were not used to being pushed from below. There were some great papers written about this. Remember this was in the Air-Land Battle era. Light infantry was expected to operate in the attack via deep infiltration and in the defense by hiding and being bypassed and then operating in the enemy rear areas. They were fully expected to operate about two weeks on their own. This concept was validated during REFORGER 90 – “Centurion Shield.” This was the era when body armor was a helmet and a BDU shirt. All movement and attack was based on stealth and moving around and never at the enemy. You had to out think because you lacked the brute force.
“High quality communication. ” not, “hi quality comm. equipment. ” just saying.
