CHARLIE MIKE.
I may not be military, but I understand depression and not trying to burden others with your demons. I woke up every day for 2 years wanting to die. If it wasn’t for my children I wouldn’t be here to write this. This is such a terribly sad story and I am so sorry for this family. I hope this podcast shows people that it is OK to ask for help. It takes a lot of courage to come forward, and I hope this helps people to do that. She is a very courageous woman to bring her story out to try to help others understand and to seek help.
From personal experience: Don’t be fooled by a sudden change in attitude by someone you think might be in danger of suicide. The calmness is because they made their decision and are just waiting for the right time to act. The decision has been made, the plan is in place, and they’re just going through the motions until it’s time to act. Don’t leave that person alone for a minute. Get them to a medical facility even if you have to call the police for help. Stay calm, have a plan to help, then get them out of danger (ie, no weapons, rope, etc. in reach). Fifteen years, and I remember it like it was yesterday.
Heartfelt thank you for your message, courage, sacrifice, and service. I hope your story and advocacy raises awareness about mental health and TBI and that collectively we can do a MUCH better job supporting those who have sacrificed so much for us. Though not TBI related, during the stress of the COVID pandemic I closely supported a collogue who lost his job. I was overjoyed when he found a new job only to be greatly shocked and saddened several weeks later when he took his own life. Leaves one searching the past for warning signs and wishing they could have done more. In a different domain, athletics struggles with the same mental health denial and stigma. I hope Simone Biles’ courage helps move that conversation forward. While I am proud of my daughter’s accomplishments as a college athlete, I am most proud that, inspired by Victoria Garrick, she has been a vocal advocate for sports mental health.
