I’m confused – the silver star citation states that although partially paralysed after being shot in the head, “disregarding his painful injury he resolutely controlled
his unit throughout the remainder of the firefight”, but in the podcast, Ike says he blacked out when shot and came to when a corpsman was tending to him. Did he simply forget what he was doing after being shot?
My dad (b. 1918) was one of the fellows who was tasked with repairing helicopters during Vietnam and Korea, I believe it was contracted with Bell. His stories was that it was so sad that he would come across body parts … his and this generation is what i grew up with. They know how to shrug it off… my heroes; sincerely each and every one. I ended up with my own icu experience and i had that growing up example to follow. Thank god.
The story in this postcard is truly touching.
