Terrible situation, but what a brave young lady, she sounds very situationally aware and intelligent, to say the least. Also, a great podcast.
Actually happens to be super relevant. Currently, I am doing a course research paper on war gaming from a military and business perspective. Needless to say, Rose mentioned a few things in the book I looked over. It seems contradictory from the record books. Definitely not saying Ms.Schindler is wrong by any means.
She mentioned that after WWI everything seemed to be good. (maybe it was where she was living). However, scholarly records paint a different picture. From the Treaty Versailles, created extreme restrictions, economic collapse, rationing, famine, hyperinflation, failed reparations from WWI, France occupying Germany and securing natural resources resulting in strikes. To persuade the French to leave there was the Great Coalition introducing reforms through the Dawes Plan, a new currency, longer reparation payments, and loans from the U.S. that temporarily settled hyperinflation.
Could of been all good.
However, during WWI after the US entered the war (sinking of commerce ships after the German Admiralty Declaration) there was a significant decrease in the labor workforce available to upkeep the agriculture, add in high global temperature, created drought conditions, failure to apply dryland farming techniques, wind erosion creating the dust bowl famine. On top of this was the U.S. stock market crash in 1929 from buying stocks on unsecured credit, and other international financial crisis occupying ( Japan/ Taiwan) resulted in US banks demanding return payment on the loans but Germany defaulted on them. All together leading into the development of the great depression.
As well as, another German depression that forced factories to close, unemployment to increase and the citizens to lose faith in the Weimer government. Setting up the effectiveness of Nazi propaganda and the rise of power for Hitler to be named chancellor, The enabling act of 1933, foundation of the 3rd Reich, Night of Long Knives, Hitler to Become Fuhrer and the declaration of a totalitarian Police State. Under these conditions would lead to Rose’s childhood of the Hungarian soldiers seizing the family’s store. ( to note I didn’t realize Hungarian soldiers did this before Germans)
Anyways, I will have to get the book as I could be mixing the time of events up. I am trying to be accurate as possible but you know social cleansing, ideological control, accidents, weathering, limited access of records, etc.
Standby for more periodically, its quite a project and might have a little something-something for you on the low when it’s done. I might pitch you a design document for feedback off the air.
Look forward to the coming podcasts.
You might find some additional information.

This was an incredible podcast both in the deepest of compassion and inspirational ways. Listening to stories like this continue to shape me in ways to be extremely thankful for what I have, who I am, and where I am. Shaping me to quite complaining and being unthankful because there are more things to be thankful for than I can put a number too. To simply be able to shower, and multiple pairs of clean clothes. This podcast is really beginning to put me on the path of “getting after it.” Thank You Rose for sharing this story and really getting me to cherish what I have in my life! GAI
Thank you for telling this story. We must never forget.
Jocko,
Thank you so much for doing this podcast. It was amazing.
Wow, I just finished this podcast. Rose is an inspiration to me, her tenacity & never-give-up-hope attitude are inspiring.
Listening to this made me so, so thankful for all the Allied men & women who fought so hard & gave everything to give us freedom.
I had just listened to podcast 216 about Reg Curtis and had thoughts wondering if all the Allied casualties were really worth it… now I know the answer. Yes, it was worth it, and I now have the freedom I had because of the men & women who gave their lives for our freedom.
I’m going to go to Rose’s website now to see about ordering her book.
Thank you Jocko & Echo.
I had tears in my eyes for so much of this episode. Thank you for interviewing this amazing woman.
I always enjoy your podcasts and this one was incredible. You did a great job in interviewing Rose and it was very powerful. Thank you for all the work you do in teaching us about leadership, life, and sacrifice.
The breadth and depth of your podcasts never cease to amaze me…thankyou!
What an amazing podcast. So important to make this time in history real for all of us. Rose, you are amazing.
Hearing her story made me appreciate the freedom & liberty that I have here in America ????????
I’m so glad I listened to this podcast. What an amazing woman. I really had no idea. I’m going to buy this book and read it to my two 12 year old girls.
I’m thankful to hear this Angel laugh. Amazing.
Thank you for this podcast. That was really special.
I have finished the podcast yet , but I bought the hardcover copy of the book already. A book like this should be in everyone’s home so that we don’t forget that evil is out there. This book will be in my home. Thank you Jocko. Stay the path!
It was an honor to hear a first hand account of Rose and Max Schindler. I will not forget it. Hearing their story was gripping. I have so much to be thankful for.
We all have so much to be thankful for! This is a life changing story full of truth that the whole world should hear. Just wow. I will pass this information along.
Rose,
You are a force in this world. Your harrowing and inspiring story of bravery and tenacity to hold on to hope despite the horror you endured left me awestruck. Thank you for sharing. I look forward to reading the book!
Jocko,
Thank you for sharing this powerful story and bringing awareness to the book. This was incredible and so well done!
Hello! Loving the podcast.
There was a guy Witold Pilecki.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witold_Pilecki
Great history of his life. He voluntarily been captured and sent to Auschwitz to gather information about what they are doing there to the prisoners. He escaped and was one of the first to report about this but unfortunately many didn’t listen or already know.
I highly recommend his life story.

Been listening to your podcast for a few months now. I started with #121-123 about Chesty Puller and his son. Have also listened to the ones with Roger Hayden, amazing what he and his teammates did. And today i listed to the one with Rose Schindler, how moving, what a story.
Thank you to you, Echo and your team for doing these!
God Bless!
Mate this was phenomenal to watch and listen, thank you Rose Schindler
Society collapsed so fast. We need to not let that happen here, but also tread softly so we don’t initiate it either.
I sent this podcast to multiple people because her story should be and needs to be told and retold. One thing I noted throughout the interview was her one word comment, “unbelievable” . . . I kept saying the same thing. I also thought to myself, what makes us think this could not happen again? How easy it appears to remove our freedoms especially in the light of current events that have locked down the USA. I would like to hear her take on the current lockdowns.
I am grateful for her courage to tell this story and to all those who have as well.
Very moving. Rose is an incredible human.
This presentation was very powerful. If we as a human race do not learn from this it will happen again.
I have read your post very carefully and I just want to say that the information you shared is really great and I have learned a lot from it.
